Land Clearing in Beaufort County, SC

Land clearing is the full job: standing timber, understory, stumps and root mass removed so the ground can be built on, farmed, fenced or simply used. On most Beaufort County parcels that means working around a marsh edge, a wetland finger, or a stand of oaks the county would rather you kept.

How we approach a wooded parcel

We walk it first. What we are looking for is the shape of the constraint: where the high ground stops, where water sits after rain, whether there is a critical-area line along the marsh, and whether any of the hardwoods are big enough to be protected.

Only then does the price make sense. Two ten-acre parcels a mile apart in Okatie can differ by a factor of three because one of them is half buffer.

Methods we use

Mulching

A mulching head grinds standing vegetation where it stands and leaves the chips on the ground. Nothing gets hauled, nothing gets burned, and the mulch layer holds soil in place through the wet season. Best for underbrush through mid-size trees.

Dozer and excavator clearing

For heavy timber and full stump removal. Material is piled and either ground, hauled off, or burned where a permit allows. This is what you want when the site needs to be built on soon.

Selective clearing

Understory comes out, canopy stays. Common on lots where the live oaks are the reason somebody bought the property in the first place.

Stumps

Decide this before the quote. Grinding stumps to below grade costs more than leaving them, and whether you need it depends entirely on what happens next. A pasture can live with stumps. A house pad cannot.

Before we start

Land disturbance over an acre generally triggers a state stormwater permit, and work near the marsh can require a critical-area authorization. We will tell you which applies to your parcel. Full permitting guide →
